Stainless Steel Nuts

What types of stainless steel nuts are available?

Stainless Steel Nuts are available in many varieties including hex nuts (metric sizes made to Din 934), nyloc locking nuts (metric sizes made to Din 985), locking or jam nuts (made to Din 439) and many others such as stainless steel barrel nuts.

They are available in thread types: Metric (coarse and fine pitch), UNC, UNF and BSW threads. Keep in mind how to maintain stainless steel nuts.

What grades of nuts are available?

Grades 304 and 316 stainless steel nuts are available plus Super Duplex 2507 stainless for salt water environments.

What strength of stainless nuts are available?

Stainless steel nut strength varies depending on the wire they are manufactured from and production methods used. Most metric size nuts are made to a tensile strength of over 700 MPa and are as marked A2-70 and A4-70. Many are also made to a tensile strength of over 800 MPa (as marked A4-80), but the strongest stainless steel nut on the market off the shelf is the Bumax 109 stainless nut made to a tensile strength of 1000 MPa.

How do I stop nuts and bolts galling?

All stainless steel bolts and nuts should be lubricated with a Nickel or PTFE based lubricant for stainless to prevent galling or cold welding. Galling can occur when oxide film coated metals (like stainless steel) of similar hardness’s are tightened without lubrication and bind at a molecular level.
