What is the difference between BSP and NPT pipe fitting threads?

BSP (British Standard Pipe) are usually a combination of BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) threads for male threaded fittings and BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel) threads for female threaded fittings. This ensures a locking occurs between the mating surfaces. NPT (National Pipe Thread) is an American standard pipe thread. BSP and NPT are not interchangeable.
