What is the strongest stainless steel bolt?

Most stainless steel bolts are made to a minimum tensile strength of 700MPa (marked A2-70 or A4-70 on metric bolts), though some are made to 800 MPa tensile strength (marked A4-80 or Bumax 88) or 1000 MPa (Bumax 109). The strongest stainless steel bolt ‘off the shelf‘ is the Bumax 129 stainless steel bolts which are made to 1200 MPa tensile strength from Duplex 2205 stainless steel with a corrosion resistance PRE value > 34. How do I stop stainless steel bolts rusting?

Stainless steel has at least 10.5% Chromium. Stainless steel works by the Chromium reacting with Oxygen to create a passive film protecting the iron in it from oxidising and rusting.

To prevent stainless steel from rusting:

  • Select the right grade for the application and environment
  • Ensure the stainless surface is as smooth as possible
  • Follow a cleaning schedule and allow rain water washing where possible
  • Ensure the surface is not contaminated with Fe particles from Carbon Steel or tooling

How to clean stainless steel bolts?

If Stainless Steel is rusting or tea staining then Cleaning of stainless steel is best done with a stainless steel cleaner such as Action Gel. A rust remover such as has a Phosphoric Acid base and should be carefully handled with gloves and safety glasses.

How do I stop stainless steel bolts galling?

All stainless steel bolts, threads and mating services should be lubricated with a Nickel or PTFE based lubricant for stainless to prevent stainless steel galling. Galling or cold-welding can occur when oxide film coated metals (like stainless steel) of similar hardness’s are tightened without lubrication and bind at a molecular level.
